I don’t own an iPhone

I still don’t have an iPhone. I’m not against them, I simply manage to get by without one. I don’t need to be online all the time, if someone needs me they call me, and if I need directions I’ll just ask someone, which is perhaps why conceptual artist Nobutaka Aozaki’s latest work particularly appeals to me. For “Here To There” he poses as a tourist and asks random New York pedestrians for directions, getting them to draw a map on a scrap of paper. He then arranges these scribbles in order, to make them function as part of a larger map. Not only is this a reflection of Nobu’s ongoing fascination with public engagement, it also highlights just how unusual the once common act of asking for directions has become.
